From 2010-2014 I worked with illustrator Mink Couteaux on the visual identity of the Bits of Freedom Big Brother Awards, an annual awards show highlighting the most grievous violations of online privacy in the Netherlands.
The ongoing design and research challenge of this work lay in no small part in visually representing issues surrounding digital rights without resorting to the hack visual cliches (no pun intended) of locks, eyes, and tornado swirls of 1’s and 0’s.
We always attempted to approach the visuals as representations of people, and the (unseen) systems and networks of power they must operate within. All of these systems are expressions of human intent. There must be no hiding behind the curtains of ‘algorithms’ or ‘big data’.
